< NETHERLANDS | AMSTERDAM: NH Amsterdam Schiller
The present-day NH Schiller Hotel was built in 1912. Despite many renovations over the years, the splendid art deco elements remain preserved and intact.
Some special characteristics are above all the sculpted façade, wrought-iron balconies, and the lovely stained-glass windows throughout the building. After this last extensive
renovation from October 1996 to April 1997, following the take-over by Krasnapolsky Hotels & Restaurants, the style elements from the Art Deco period which one sees throughout
the building, lobby, guest rooms, halls and the Brasserie were preserved.
Many distinguished guests were in residence at the NH Schiller Hotel after its opening in 1913. They were attracted by the ambience of the Schiller bar which was a popular meeting point for artists, writers and theatre lovers.
The regular visitors included: the painter/photographer George Breitner, sculptor Ossip Zadkine. Writers Jan Greshoff, Herman Heijermans and writer Slauerhof, along with the actors Nap en Fien de la Mar, Louis Davids and Jean-Louis Pisuisse. As a matter of fact, the well-to-do painter Breitner lived in the hotel for many years, as well as Herman Heijermans and the Pisuisse family.
Many hotel guests were quite astonished at the prolific body of work which hotel founder Frits Schiller managed to create between all of his other duties as hotelier. The paintings were not only rich in proportion and quality, but also in variety. Schiller managed to paint a diverse range of city luminaries, landscapes, still lives and portraits “between lunch and dinner”. Today, more than 350 of these distinguished works hang permanently throughout the NH Schiller Hotel. The collection remains a unique reminder of the early days of this bohemian meeting place.
Today, the NH Schiller Hotel is part of the Spanish international chain NH Hoteles. NH Hoteles strives to provide guests with an unforgettable experience by making their stay unique. NH Hoteles is determined to provide the ever more anticipating guests with a consistent and efficient hospitality experience, one with eye for detail.
