< UNITED KINGDOM | LONDON: Hilton London Paddington
Originally known as the Great Western Royal Hotel, Hilton London Paddington was designed by architect Philip Hardwick in 1853 in the style of a Louis
XIV. It is to be part of the Brunelian dream that heralds the great age of travel. A mere 14 months later, on 9th June 1854, Albert, the Prince Consort, and the King of
Portugal open the hotel as the first railway hotel in Britain. The royal entourage also inspects some of the 165 rooms and the hotel is soon ranked amongst the finest in
In 1907, all of the modern amenities were installed including electric lighting, telephones and a pneumatic tube messaging service. During the 1910s, room prices start at four shilling (20p) per day. Dinner of soup, steak, coffee and brandy could also be taken in the ornate dining rooms for four shillings and sixpence (22p).
1930 – A decade of austerity begins with a modernization of hotel. This on-going programme sees the building lose its splendid interiors and ornamental façade – even the magnificent central staircase receives an unsightly cladding.
Between the 1940s and 1990s, the hotel is expanded. It remains a familiar but rather faded landmark as it loses more of its original splendor and character. In 1998, Muirgold Limited appoints Hilton International in the management of the hotel and announces a £60 million investment to restore the building to its former grandeur.
The Hilton London Paddington opened its doors in 2002. With its classic features restored, 355 rooms, a fitness centre and extensive business and leisure facilities, the hotel is offering the guests once again a haven of luxury in the heart of London. 2006/9, new rooms were added to sixth floor, all with private terraces, including two Tower Suites.
Overlooking the station, brand new Executive Lounge opens in 2007. Complimentary papers & business magazines, breakfast, canapés and drinks. Also two private meeting rooms available for rent by the hour.
