The Palace Hotel officially opened its doors to the public on Saturday 6th June 1868. It was a huge occasion in the town and a special supplement dedicated to the
hotel was even printed in The Buxton Advertiser.
It had taken months to build and The Palace Hotel Company had promised the town that it would increase the 'name and fame' of the town as well as bringing wealth to local businesses. Many builders worked to complete the huge building under the instruction of Mr Henry Currey, a famous architect at the time who was brought from London to design the hotel. Several interior designers worked on the interior of the hotel to ensure the luxurious surrounding were completed down to the last hand painted details.
The hotel when it first opened covered 4000 square yards and although the number of bedrooms is unsure the ground floor consisted of dining, coffee, reading and drawing rooms as well as smoking and billard rooms mainly used by the gentlemen in the hotel. The ballroom was admired nationally. The pool and leisure club extension was added at a much later date. Outside the gardens were much larger then they are now and contained terraces, croquet greens and tennis courts.
Railways brought people to the town every hour and it was usually only those traveling first class which stayed in the luxury of The Palace Hotel which was famous for providing the 'comforts of home with the freedom and luxury of a hotel'. After all, few hotels provided hot and cold running water.
The Palace Hotel has also done its bit for the War Effort. During the First World War it was taken over by the Canadian Forces as a billet and hospital. During the Second World War it was taken over by the Civil Service and used as offices.
Famous American actor, screenwriter, director and producer, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford used the Palace hotel as their secret rendevous when having their much publicised affair.
Although throughout the years many changes and additions have been made in the hotel, the principles still remain the same, to provide exquisite service in luxury surroundings.
